Test The Nation is a licensed property from a production company in Holland. It has been successful in several countries including the UK. The IQ test is done using live TV, Internet and SMS. The SMS component is a new development. The technology to do the web and Internet interaction was written jointly by Lateral Profiles and NZOOM.
The programme was presented by serious newsreader / lawyer Simon Dallow and archetypal blonde, ex- Wheel of Fortune girl Lana Crocroft. It was highly successful and was one of the highest rating shows of the year.
Several registration and play methods were offered. Online only, SMS only and a combination of SMS and on-line. On-line and combination registrations enabled a wide range of demographics to be captured (age, sex, location, hair, eyes, favourite sport, occupation etc)
Questions were asked on air and also delivered across the internet. SMS users were asked to write answers down on a form printed in the TV times and newspapers, then send the answers as a string of characters e.g. adbdcad. There were a lot of questions so this process happened several times.
We collected and collated the results for each user, then broadcast by SMS at the end of the programme containing the viewers IQ.
In the third section of the programme a light hearted discussion was done comparing all the different demographics, using summary demographic information captured at registration time.
Summary:
Test the nation was notable for several reasons:
